We’ve now reached that time of year when we pack away our light summer jackets and start digging out the slightly heavier, warmer ones, so we can keep out the Danish autumn gales and winter chill. We all agree that the most important feature of a jacket is that it keeps us warm, but we also feel strongly that it should look good and follow the latest fashion trends. But what are the major trends in jackets for men and women this season? We’ve taken a look back at the spring catwalks, where jacket styles for the 2017/2018 winter season were unveiled.
In Denmark, there’s a tendency in autumn/winter to dress in slightly darker, more sombre colours, as they evoke warmth and a sense of security, which is why we tend to wear dark trousers and chunky, warm jumpers in darker shades. The same self-imposed ‘rules’ largely apply to our jackets too – we know that a black or grey jacket will go with everything in our wardrobe, and is therefore the safe choice when selecting a new winter jacket.
But, but, but… isn’t that also the slightly more boring choice?
Why not do away with the ‘rule’ that a jacket has to be a sombre colour just because it’s winter, and be a bit more daring with your choice of colour? And fashion dictates it too: this season, we should tuck away the slightly duller colours like black, grey and navy completely, and instead dare to venture into some bolder colour combinations or go for a full tone-on-tone look. This winter, the rules on how we should dress have been completely done away with, and instead there’s much more scope to play around with colours and the ways they’re combined. In fact, this season we’re seeing plenty of brighter colours on jackets, as well as more colourful prints, which create a trendier look.

The catwalk has spoken: colours and prints are the big trend for AW/2017
Who doesn’t love seeing those fresher, bolder colours brightening up the streets? We certainly do, and this season we’re in luck, because this winter, anything goes! So now it’s time to really make the most of those bold colours and cool prints on our jackets. The Danish autumn and winter months are a cold time of year, when warm coats top everyone’s wish list. This autumn and winter, you really mustn’t hold back when it comes to mixing colours, prints or styles – winter 17/18 is going to be one big party!
One trend that has resurfaced time and again over the last few years is the incorporation of materials and styles from the world of sport, which are repeatedly being brought into the collections. It’s therefore clear to see that the bomber jacket has secured a firm place in the fashion scene alongside the puffed-up down jacket, which also clearly evokes a very sporty look. This season, you’ll find these styles in bold colours such as yellow, red or blue, or with prints in various colour combinations. For women, you’ll also find them in shades of red or pink – often in shiny fabrics.
Another major trend showcased on the catwalk was fur. Whether it’s full-length fur coats, very short fur jackets or the stylish version with a fur collar on the hood. And if you’re not keen on real fur, you’ll also find them in faux fur, so you can still be on-trend without worrying about the animals whose fur went into the jacket. Here, too, you certainly shouldn’t hold back on either colour or print – the more extravagant, the better – you mustn’t be overlooked in this season’s winter chill!
Fashion tip: Whether you’re a man or a woman, it’s the trends from the world of sport you should be looking out for this season, and by all means don’t hold back on the colourful prints, styles or gorgeous details – the more, the better. As for the ladies, just go for the fluffiest fur jacket you can find – and again, choose one in a bold colour, so that winter 2017/2018 is a real celebration of colour!
So are black or grey jackets completely out of fashion?
No, of course not!
Although it’s the bold colours like red, yellow and blue that are arguably the prevailing trend for winter fashion 17/18, the slightly more muted ‘natural’ shades were also spotted on the catwalk, such as army green, sand-coloured or camouflage prints. That’s pretty much how it is every year with the autumn/winter collections – on the one hand, we see trends that hark back to the good old days with the styles and colours we know work, and on the other hand, we look to the future and experiment with brand-new trends.
So, no… it’s by no means wrong to wear a jacket in black, grey or the more ‘nature-inspired’ colours this season, if that’s what you feel most comfortable in. However, if you do choose a jacket in those dark, more muted colours, we’d strongly encourage both girls and boys out there to experiment with their look in other ways this season – feel free to add a bit of colour or a print to your outfits, so it doesn’t all end up being black-on-black or grey-on-grey.

Colourful jackets for men and women
We can’t say it enough: if you want to be right on trend this autumn/winter, you need to venture out into some cool colour combinations, where there’s scope to play around with styles, prints and colours in your outfits.
Jackets can certainly be in bold colours, and it’s perfectly fine to style your jacket with a hat, scarf and gloves in equally bold colours – the better you are at combining these bold colours, the cooler and more fashionable your look will be. You could try a tone-on-tone look, where, for example, you pair your red jacket with a red hat and mittens – then you’ll definitely be right on trend this season.
