The history of the T-shirt
The most universal item of clothing in existence and truly an unrivalled fashion classic – the T-shirt. It’s not hard to see where the name for this garment comes from. If you lay the T-shirt flat, you’ll see how a large T emerges. The T-shirt traces its origins back to the Spanish-American War in the early 1900s. There, it was worn by American sailors and was intended as an undershirt beneath their thick uniforms. After the war ended, the T-shirt became a visible part of the uniform, and it thus became a common sight to see veterans wearing baggy military trousers with a classic T-shirt in khaki, sand and black. From the 1950s to the present day
A lot has happened since the T-shirt first saw the light of day. Since then, it has become a central part of modern men’s fashion. We saw fashion icon James Dean wearing the classic white basic T-shirt under his leather jacket back in the 1950s, and he certainly helped to immortalise the jeans-and-T-shirt combination. The same was true of Marlon Brando in the 1951 film *A Streetcar Named Desire*, where the T-shirt was truly allowed to shine as a standalone piece. Since then, the T-shirt has enjoyed periods of varying popularity. In recent years, the T-shirt has once again become a central element of men’s wardrobes and is now firmly established as part of the collections of the major fashion houses.

A good cotton T-shirt doesn’t have to be expensive
Cotton is a fabric we often take for granted. It’s always been a staple in our wardrobes, and we remember it from our childhood – in soft pyjamas, underwear and T-shirts, amongst other things. Cotton is a fabric that makes up a large part of our wardrobes, and it has a wealth of properties that are important to you when buying clothes, but which you don’t necessarily think about.
When we buy a new cotton T-shirt, we all have certain expectations that we don’t realise we’re actually entitled to have. We want a T-shirt that’s good quality; it mustn’t crease, it should feel lovely against the skin, it must be durable, and ideally it shouldn’t change shape or size in the wash. These are expectations we have, but we never really think about them when buying T-shirts, and we often fall into the trap of buying the most expensive one, because we assume it’s the best quality without actually knowing for sure or asking any questions. We often hear that many people believe a T-shirt costing 500–600 kr. will be of such high quality that it will last a very long time, won’t fade, won’t lose its shape or shrink too much in the wash. This isn’t always the case, as a T-shirt’s value often depends on its brand and is therefore not determined by the quality of the cotton it’s made from. In short: expensive brands produce T-shirts at a high price because of the brand name, not because of the quality.
Men’s T-shirts in a luxurious cotton quality
Cotton comes in a wide range of qualities, and the quality of your T-shirt can be judged by the finish the fabric has been given. The quality of your T-shirt is mainly determined by the length of the fibres in the cotton fabric – the longer the fibres, the better, softer, more comfortable and more durable the fabric will be. This means that a T-shirt with a weight of 165 g/m² has shorter fibres than a T-shirt with a weight of 220 g/m². The weight of the fabric determines how tightly it is woven, and therefore also how long the fibres in the fabric are.
Consequently, you cannot equate quality with price, because it depends entirely on the type of cotton fabric used – and that is, in fact, what determines whether the T-shirt is of good quality. Furthermore, this particular style is made from 100 per cent ring-spun, combed cotton, features double-stitched seams and has been silicone-treated, ensuring the very highest quality. Last but not least, this type of T-shirt has also been double pre-shrunk, meaning it will shrink only minimally in the wash.
